Membership Requirements
An individual is eligible for membership in The American Legion if the individual has served in the Armed Forces of the United States at any time after December 7, 1941.

Because eligibility dates remain open, all members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.

Must have served at least one day of active military duty (Title 10 for Reserves or Guard) and honorably discharged or still serving honorably.

New Membership

Eligible veterans applying for first time membership must complete an application one of two ways:

Old Fashioned Snail-Mail Way:

1. Complete American Legion Membership Application.
   
   Print two (2) completed copies.  Keep one copy for your records. Mail the other copy to P.O. Box 182, Granby, CT  06035, together with your dues payment. (Dues amount $45.00.  Applications are also available at the Post.)
    
2. Provide a copy of your DD214 discharge (for new applications only).
    
3. Pay the membership dues ($45.00).  Make checks payable to Shannon-Shattuck Post 182.   DO NOT SEND CASH.
    
4. If the information is correct, membership will be approved and then a membership card will be mailed to you.
    
5. Membership dues payment, if current year dues are not paid. If current dues are paid, please pay dues for next year's membership.

Transfers

The transfer from one post to another is a privilege granted to any paid-up Legionnaire with the approval of the post to which the member desires to transfer.

A TRANSFER MAY BE MADE UNDER THE FOLLOWING RULES:

1. No transfer shall be made unless the member requesting transfer has a membership card showing the member is in good standing at the time the transfer is requested.

2. No charge shall be made to the member for the privilege of transfer and no dues shall be transferred from one post to another. The accepting post may require payment of the difference in dues on a pro-rated basis if dues are higher than the transferring member’s former post.

3. A Legionnaire desiring transfer of membership must first secure approval from the post to which transfer is desired. This may be done orally or in writing. The Adjutant of the new post will complete and route the parts of the form as instructed.

4. Department or National Headquarters will transfer the member’s record to the new post, provided that member’s current record is on file and provided the information on the transfer is complete.

5. No member may transfer to another post if the member has disciplinary actions within their post and this post has notified National Headquarters of the situation.
