Who Are We?

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans organization.  A community-service organization which now numbers 1.6 million members -- men and women -- in nearly 13,000 American Legion Posts worldwide.  These Posts are organized into 55 Departments -- one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.

The American Legion's national headquarters is in Indianapolis, Indiana, with additional offices in Washington, DC.   Click  here  for more information about The American Legion Headquarters.

Connecticut's American Legion headquarters is one of 55 Departments organized under The American Legion's national headquarters.  On June 10, 1919, the first Connecticut temporary executive committee meeting was held at the Hartford City Club. This day, Connecticut World War veterans made the decision to become a corporation. The American Legion, Connecticut Branch.

Granby's American Legion Post:

Shannon-Shattuck Post 182

Since our charter in 1948, our American Legion Post has been welcoming Veterans from all branches of our Armed Forces.  Today, we continue to welcome all military personnel serving our country.  Joining our Post enables you to continue serving your God, Country and Community.  Our mission is to implement the goals, aspirations, dreams, peace and blessings for our country, friends and families embodied in our preamble below.

Post 182's mission statement calls this out:
Legionnaires of Shannon-Shattuck Post 182 are driven to serve our country, our community, and our brothers- and sisters-in-arms while honoring the past and embracing the future.

Our Post is what we call a "dry Post."  This means that our business model does not depend on the selling of liquor.  We benefit from this policy because it allows us to focus on our core mission.  That doesn't mean that we're a bunch of sanctimonious teatotalers.  But drinking high-test beverages is not what we're about.

Founded by an Act of Congress after World War I, The American Legion fiercely advocates for the unique needs of every generation of veterans, service members, and their families who pledge to protect our nation. Today, we are committed to destigmatizing mental health support, offering peer-to-peer resources, and empowering everyone to Be The One in the fight to prevent veteran suicide.
